The State of Ohio is studying possible routes for a new highway connection between US 23 and I-71. Depending on which route is chosen, the project could affect local homes, farms, businesses, and natural areas.
The Peru Township Trustees understand that this issue is personal for many people. Concerns about land use, property, community character, and the environment are real and important.
While the Township does not control this project, the Trustees are committed to helping residents through the process. Our role is to:
-
Share accurate information directly from the State of Ohio
-
Help explain how the public input process works
-
Encourage informed participation
-
Support all residents, no matter their viewpoint
We are here to provide clarity—not to tell you what to think—and to make sure everyone has access to the same trusted information.
US 23/I-71 Connector Feasibility Study
This study is evaluating whether a new freeway connection between US Route 23 and Interstate 71 north of Columbus is feasible, as directed by recent state transportation budget legislation. Phase One of the study narrowed the potential focus area to US 23 north of Waldo, with possible routes running either north or south of the Village of Ashley—including one proposed route that passes through Peru Township. These options will now move into the feasibility phase for more detailed engineering analysis.
We encourage residents to review official project documents, maps, and updates. Click the button below to visit the Ohio Department of Transportation’s study webpage.
How the Connector Could Affect Peru Township
Each possible route for the connector could affect our community in different ways. Understanding these impacts can help you think about how the project might influence daily life and why your input matters.
Some areas to consider include:
-
Property and land use impacts, including the possibility of the state needing part of a property for right-of-way
-
Effects on farms, businesses, neighborhoods, and natural areas that shape the character of Peru Township and the surrounding region
-
Changes to traffic patterns, which could affect commute times, road safety, and how local roads are used
-
Environmental impacts, such as changes to streams, wildlife habitats, or overall noise levels
-
Increased strain on local services, including electric infrastructure and emergency response, as traffic and activity grow in the area
These factors show why it is important for residents to stay informed and share their perspectives. Your firsthand knowledge of our community helps ensure that any potential impacts are fully understood and considered as the study continues.
Why Your Input Matters
Community members—including homeowners, landowners, and local businesses—play a critical role in the decision-making process.
Your comments help:
-
Identify local concerns and community impacts
-
Shape which alternatives remain under consideration
-
Ensure decision makers understand how proposed routes affect daily life
We encourage every resident to learn as much as possible and to make their voice heard.
Tips for Providing Effective Comments
To ensure your voice is clearly heard:
-
Be as specific as possible about your concerns
-
Reference maps, locations, parcel numbers, or landmarks when applicable
-
Describe how different alternatives might affect your home, farm, business, or community
-
Share local knowledge (flooding, wildlife, traffic patterns, community use, historical areas, etc.)
-
Suggest ideas or alternatives if you have them
All perspectives are valuable—your lived experience offers insight that planners cannot get from data alone.
